VISION AND MISSION

Port Shepstone Museum is one of the popular tourists’ destinations in KZN, South Coast under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.  The museum opened on the 23 October 2018 by former Premier Tw Mchunu.   Port Shepstone Museum is committed to grow the appreciation of local heritage, history, and tourism, to create a sustainable development and to promote social cohesion. This is achieved by forming collaborative partnership with various relevant stakeholders to empower communities with museum knowledge and skills: educational programs, careers, research, collections & exhibitions, events etc.

 

PROGRAMS

EDUCATION:    Daily   Tours for visitors and internal and external workshops for youth and adult, schools and tertiary institutions.

RESEARCH:      Public are invited to share with us any Oral/Cultural stories, events of the past regarding socio -political, economic, maritime, and heritage sites etc.

COLLECTIONS:  Museum encourage public to donate with any valuable Maritime/Cultural, religious, and functional   artifacts etc., collections of artefacts and historical information is  preserved and conserved for future generations.

EXHIBITIONS:    Temporary and Permanent exhibitions are curated and displayed to educate and exchange information that relates to history, heritage to promote social cohesion.

CAREERS:     Guide and educate learners about careers that relates to Museum, Heritage and Tourism etc..

PUBLICATION:  Museum information and activities are available in Museum Newsletter, pamphlets, catalogue, social media, Website and fliers.

 

RECENT ACTIVITIES: Photos attached.

Social Cohesion Mural which is created in 2021 to attract local visitors.

National Science Week to educate public/ youth about Climate Change and its effects to the environment.

Heritage- Reed Dance – to encourage youth to join Reed dance at Enyokeni, Nongoma to

International Museum Day- to educate public especial youth about the significance of museum and heritage in public and its environment.

The Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality (previously Hibiscus Coast and Ezinqoleni Local Municipality) is a Category B municipality situated within the Ugu District in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It is the largest of four municipalities in the district, making up a third of its geographical area.
