ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The main mandate of the department is to manage the built environment, economic development, innovation and investment promotion. It is responsible to facilitate overall economic development of the area as well as ensuring a functional built environment which supports existence of human life in general, economic activities and the natural environment. It performs its mandate through managing the following functions: land use rights and building plans, spatial planning, environmental management, economic development, business regulations, tourism promotion, poverty alleviation, aviation services, investment promotion, business innovation, municipal strategic properties, and outdoor advertising. The department is organised into seven units to carry out its mandate: building control, town planning, business innovations and investment promotion, economic development, aviation services (Margate Airport), environmental management and signage control.
