Council unanimously agrees on naming the newly constructed Port Shepstone Maritime Museum after the late stalwart Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Council meeting unanimously agreed on naming the newly constructed Port Shepstone Maritime Museum after the late stalwart, Mama Madikizela-Mandela. The Council saw it befitting that this state of the art Port Shepstone Maritime Museum is named after such a stalwart who made an enormous contribution towards the political freedom of the oppressed in South Africa and the Blacks in particular.

Mama Madikizela-Mandela, who was usually referred to as uMama weSizwe did not only focus on the struggle for women emancipation but against the apartheid regime. This unanimous decision to name the Port Shepstone Maritime Museum after uMama Madikizela-Mandela follows the one that was also unanimously taken by Council to name the new and bigger Port Shepstone Library after the late uTata Originald Tambo popularly known as OR.

The municipality will then process this resolution to Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the KZN Province so that these facilities are named after these stalwarts who are deserving to be honoured and recognized. The naming of these public facilities follows the one of naming the main Port Shepstone Street after one of the great statesman, uTata Nelson Mandela, which is known as Nelson Mandela Drive.
