The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality continues to excel to shine amongst other municipalities as it continues to be recognised and scoops awards.

The Department of Human Settlement recognises excellence and best practices in the provision of decent human settlements by municipalities and contractors through Govan Mbeki Awards which start at provincial level up to the national level. These awards are also aimed at promoting best practices while motivating and honouring stakeholders and role players in the human settlement value chain. These include developers, building contractors, the banking sector, community-based organisations, building material suppliers and professional associations of consulting engineers and quantity surveyors.

The 2018 KwaZulu-Natal Govan Mbeki Awards ceremony was held on 20 September 2018 in Durban and RNM once more participated in these awards. RNM participated as the developer together with some contractors who are implementing agencies on behalf of RNM and they together managed to be recognised four times. The Fezeka Business Services CC, which is an implementing agent on behalf of RNM in KwaNzimakwe Rural Housing Project and Gamalakhe In-Situ Housing Project was declared the second runners up in the Best Established Woman Contractor in the Subsidy Market. This category recognises qualified and registered contractor who have built more than 500 houses in the last three years and made a significant impact to the communities by building sustainable human settlements.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was then declared the first runner up in the Best Rural Housing Project through the Oshabeni Rural Housing Project. This category, which had twenty two entries, recognises the best housing project in areas outside of the city or urban boundary where populations are spatially dispersed. RNM was once more called upon on stage as its Implementing Agent of the KwaMadlala Rural Housing Project, On Time Projects were declared the winners of the category of the Best Emerging Woman Contractor in the Subsidy Market. On Time Projects, which is owned by the former employee of the then Hibiscus Coast Municipality will now be competing in National Level representing the KZN Province in this category which recognises qualified women contractors who are registered with the NHBRC.

As that was not enough, RNM was once more declared the winners of the Best Accredited Local Municipality: Level 1. RNM has been the winners of this category for the third consecutive year and it would have been for the sixth consecutive year if the former Hibiscus Coast Municipality was still in existence. A level 1 accredited municipality undertakes some delegated housing functions such as beneficiary management, subsidy budget planning, allocation, priority programme management and human settlement administration. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will also now be participating in the National Govan Mbeki Awards representing the Province of KZN in this category.

It is worth mentioning that Ray Nkonyeni Municipality were also part of the finalists in the Arbour City Awards which were held on 07 September 2018 which are in recognition of the greenest city. These accolades and others are a confirmation of the great strides the municipality, both political and administrative component together with its citizens are striving to achieve by industriously working together.
