Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) scooped not one, but two Provincial Govan Mbeki Awards in 2017 in the Best Accredited Municipality level 1 category, as well as in the Best Rural Housing Project at a ceremony which was held at the Greyville Conference Center in Durban recently. This was the fifth time the municipality has won this prestigious award.

This time around RNM won the accolade for rural housing due to the fact that it applied new enhancement norms and standard as set by the KZN Department of Human Settlement. The Kwa Ndwalane Rural Housing, which was a project bench- marked for adjudication, won due to the fact that the project highlighted some new and unique features as compared to previous housing projects undertaken by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in this competition. Some of the new features includes plastering in and out, new design of roof tiles and ceiling boards.

Previously Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has won Best Accredited Municipality level 1 category twice at national level and has won it every year at the provincial level since 2012.

The municipality can also indicate that this accreditation means that the municipality is afforded a special delegation in terms of the Housing Act 107 of 1997, which permits the municipality to perform certain functions which are of provincial and national competence in regards to housing matters.

RNM is expected to compete and participate in national awards to be held in Port Elizabeth in November 2017.
